How to start a book club

Six steps from “we should start a book club” to a full year on the calendar. Name ideas and a year planner are built in.

1. Find your people

Six to ten members is a good size. Fewer, and one cancellation stalls the meeting. More, and quieter people stop talking. Start with two or three friends who read, then ask each of them to bring one person. A mix of friends and friends-of-friends keeps the talk from turning into gossip.

2. Pick a format

3. Name your club

A name makes the group feel real, and it gives your group chat a title. Pick a style, add your town if you like, and tap for ideas.

    4. Agree on a few rules

Rules sound stiff, but a few shared expectations keep a club going past the third month. Agree on these at the first meeting:

    5. Choose the first book

Pick something most people can finish in a month, around 250 to 400 pages, with characters or ideas people will disagree about. Ask everyone for one suggestion and spin the book club picker, or let the wheel deal from long-time book club favorites. For the first meeting, the book club questions wheel takes care of what to talk about.

    6. Plan the year

Add your books and members, pick your meeting day, and get a schedule with a book and a host for every month. Download it as a calendar file so everyone can add the dates to their phone.

    Book club FAQ

What do you do at a book club meeting?

Most meetings open with 15 to 20 minutes of catching up and snacks, then about an hour on the book. The host starts with an easy question, everyone shares a first reaction, and the talk goes from there. End by confirming the next book and host.

What if people don’t finish the book?

Let them come anyway. Agree that the meeting may spoil the ending, and keep a few questions that work for any amount read, like what they expected or which character they’d trust.

How do you keep a book club going?

Keep the same day each month so nobody has to check calendars, rotate who hosts, and plan a few months ahead. A schedule everyone can see makes it easy to say yes.

    Is the planner private?

Yes. Your books and names stay on your device. The calendar file and shared text are made in your browser and never sent to us.
